This is how the International Adolph Kolping Foundation helps:
Kolping House and student’s hall of residence in Santiago de Chile |
In the capital of Chile in the quarter of Las Condes, KOLPING INTERNATIONAL maintains the “International Kolping House and student’s hall of residence Santiago de Chile”. It accommodates up to 45 long- and short-term students as well as tourists from all over the world, a motley crew. Young Chileans from remote provinces of the country stretching across 5,000 kilometers live here, who have got a university place at one of the over 30 universities in the capital as well as students from abroad or tourists.
And there is also a great variety regarding the social background of the guests. Chilean scholarship holders from poor circumstances share an apartment or a double room with daughters or sons of millionaires from the upper class of Central America and students from “ordinary middle-class families” or they live next door to each other. Often permanent friendships and partnerships develop beyond all social and national borders.
But also the social component is not missed out: 20 Chilean scholarship holders who study at the Catholic University Santiago and are accommodated in the student’s hall of residence get their daily breakfast and dinner here. Poor families from the provinces who come to Santiago for the examination or the surgery of their sick child live here, if need be also free of charge and also Chilean children and youth groups which spent some days in Santiago to participate in ecclesiastical, sport or cultural events (provided there are rooms available) can camp for a symbolic fee in a four person apartment.
However, maintenance of the house is expensive. Often repair costs incur as well as costs for the modernization of the inventory. As a place where students stay and work, the technical equipment must be attractive: the installation and maintenance of the broad-band internet connections in all rooms as well as four PCs which are permanently connected to the internet for the guests who don’t bring their own notebook is a permanent cost factor. Only thanks to the subsidies from the International Adolph Kolping Foundation the repairs and necessary renovations could be financed.
