Earthquake in Chile 01.04.2010
Earthquake victims are left with nothing and are dependent on help

The remains of Maria Gabriela’s house.

The relief measures are in full swing. A team from the Kolping Society of Chile is travelling throughout the country to visit the affected Kolping Families. The helpers see a lot of suffering, misery and destruction. However, they also feel the great thankfulness of the victims who realize that they are not left alone.

Juan Carlos Sáez, Executive Director of the Kolping Society of Chile, writes: “We seek to overcome this tragic situation as soon as possible and to render a valuable service to our society.

In view of such severe destruction and considering all what has to be done now, we keep our faith alive, our hope and solidarity which manifested themselves in the International Kolping Society and its networks as well as the exemplary expressions of solidarity among the members and the youth of the Kolping Society of Chile.

We thank you all for your efforts for the benefit of so many Kolping members, adolescents and all Chileans.”

Below please find photos which give you an idea of the Kolping Society’s help for the earthquake victims in Chile.

Maria Gabriela was moved to tears when she thanked all Kolping brothers and sisters for this valuable assistance amounting to approx. 1,000 Euro. She also expressed her gratitude to those members who had helped her to clear away the rubble and who keep on supporting her to re-equip her small shop.

Maria Gabriela can make more than 30 sets out of the received raw materials. Before the earthquake the widow, who has two adult children, earned the living for herself and her family with a small grocery for food and everyday necessities where she also ran a takeaway.

The structural stability of the house is damaged and the floor is bumpy. The experts recommend the demolition of the house.
