Focus on global responsibility: 10 years of SDGs and Laudato Si’

The joint conference organised by KOLPING INTERNATIONAL and the Federal Expert Committee of Kolping Germany raised the question: “How can we continue to pursue global sustainability goals in a world full of crises and geopolitical tensions?” Here you can read the full report:

A meeting for global justice

On 14 and 15 November 50 interested participants gathered by invitation of KOLPING INTERNATIONAL and the Federal Expert Committee ‘Responsibility for One World’ of Kolping Germany. The focus was on the topics:

  • 10 years of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • 10 years of Laudato Si’

The conference provided a forum for exchange, analysis and specific perspectives for the future.

Impulses from science and practical experience

Stephan Klingebiel (IDOS) opened the discussion with a presentation on the geopolitical dimension of development policy. He demonstrated how nationalism, populism and the retreat from multilateral structures are changing international cooperation.

Manfred Belle (One World Promoter NRW) reflected on the SDGs and Laudato Si’: Despite progress in areas such as renewable energies and fair trade, the implementation of many goals remains below expectations.

Eva Hengstermann (erlassjahr.de) presented the ‘Jubilee Year 2025’ initiative, which calls for debt relief for highly indebted countries as a contribution to global justice and sustainable development.

Voices from the Global South

Some particular impressions came from Indonesia, Kenya and Colombia.

  • Indonesia: Reforestation projects, climate-resilient agriculture and educational programmes for young people.
  • Kenya: Microcredits, organic farming and roof water harvesting.
  • Latin America: Networks for ecological justice and a fair energy transition.

These examples show that global responsibility begins locally – through concrete projects and international solidarity.

Conclusion: Acting together

The conference made it clear that the challenges are considerable, but change is possible. Kolping focuses on partnership, awareness raising and specific measures to make the vision of a just and sustainable world a reality.
