Cisterns allow many people to continue their lives in rural regions
The new Executive Board of Kolping Brazil continues to focus on the building of cisterns, mainly in the four north-eastern states Bahia, Ceará, Pernambuco, and Piauí. These cisterns have already allowed many people to continue their lives and their work in the rural regions of the country, instead of, as so many have done before them, moving to the big cities and search for work there under condition often unfit for human beings.
The house cisterns have a capacity of about 16,000 litres of water. Since 2000, the incredible number of 17,108 house cisterns was built, partly also financed from donations of German Diocesan Kolping Societies. The plate cisterns even have a capacity of 52,000 litres. Over 3,000 of those were built during the same period.
In Brazil’s dry north-east, water means not only life, but also a true home, because it makes a comfortable life possible in the region that the people love.
