Bolivia: Empowering women!

In Bolivia, a country with strong patriarchal structures, Kolping focuses on the empowerment of women. They are strengthened so that they can better assert themselves in their families, in society and in their working lives.

At KOLPING Bolivia, Judith T. learned that she has rights. As simple as this may sound to us, it is difficult when violence and oppression are part of everyday life. Setting limits, paying attention to one’s own needs, and saying ‘no’ – all this is on the agenda of the training programme. After this empowering course, Judith took the next step as she learned the bakery trade at the Kolping Training Centre in Sucre. Then, with the support of a small loan from Kolping Bolivia, she started her own bakery!

It has been a long and sometimes difficult journey, but today Judith is proud of herself. Her regular income ensures the family’s livelihood. Judith’s husband has changed, too. He now treats his wife with respect and is proud of her success.

There are many women in Judith’s situation. Once they have completed their training, they need a small loan – to be able to stand on their own feet. This is how small loans work: A small loan of €300 is granted in addition to the savings – that is all it takes to finance a professional oven. A future tailor needs a loan of 200 euros to secure her fabric supply for half a year.
