World Day Against Child Labour

Today is the World Day Against Child Labour. Dr. Markus Demele, General Secretary of KOLPING INTERNATIONAL, comments:

“From among the 218 million children who work around the world, at least 152 million of them work under exploitative conditions – also when it comes to suppliers for products distributed in Europe by European companies. By fostering income-generating projects, KOLPING stands aside parents in the countries that are most affected, so that their children do not have to work. Furthermore, KOLPING creates some awareness in those societies: that every person has an inalienable dignity, also at work, that must be respected by everyone. In Europe we are fighting for due diligence in human rights to be fulfilled by companies – because labour is not a commodity!“
