On the way to the Synod of Bishops,
synodal Church 2021-2023

XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in Rome on the topic of

For a synodal Church: communion, participation and mission

Dear Kolping Sisters and Kolping Brothers all over the world, Pope Francis invites us all to participate in a three-year worldwide process. The road to the Synod of Bishops 2023 has been officially opened by Pope Francis in Rome on October 9-10, 2021 and the following weekend in the dioceses around the world.

In the following phases the dioceses, associations like Kolping and finally the Bishops’ Conferences will be involved before the process leads to the actual Synod of Bishops in Rome in October 2023. We ask all Kolping Families, all national Kolping associations and other communities in our international Kolping community to participate in this process.

Two documents have been issued by the Vatican explaining the process and its contents in detail.

  • The preparatory document “For a synodal Church: communion, participation and mission”
  • The Vademecum of the General Secretariat for the Synod of Bishops

It is true that in the end almost only the bishops are allowed to deliberate on the results of this path and to make decisions, but nevertheless we as committed people at Kolping want to contribute what is important to us so that our Church has a good future. More and more we want to follow the message of Jesus and as a Church be open and inviting to all people. The experiences coming from our Kolping Families can be valuable contributions on this road.

These are the steps of the synodal process:

The meaning of the journey to which we are all called is above all that of discovering the face and form of a synodal Church, in which “everyone has something to learn. The faithful people, the college of bishops, the Bishop of Rome: all listening to each other, and all listening to the Holy Spirit, the ‘Spirit of truth’ (Jn 14:17), in order to know what He ‘says to the Churches’ (Rev 2:7).”
Taken from the Preparatory Document, No. 15
